IRA Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #5

Book Adventure

Book Adventure (https://bookadventure.com/) is a web-based program that encourages children, grades K-8, to read books by awarding them prizes for reading. This program was designed “to support parents and home educators with the management, assessment, and motivation of independent reading. Book Adventure does not provide any type of books, however, it is used along with the student’s independent reading material, either personal books from home or books from their school or public library.

Its home page is welcoming and nicely organized. As you scroll the homepage, you are able to read about the platform, view a sample of the student dashboard, view a few features that the program offers, such as the virtual reading pet and game page and a short how-to guide on setting up and utilizing the program.

Book Adventure is composed of more than 17 thousand book quizzes and over 150 thousand book-specific word lists, offers a variety of alternative assessment options, is a certified Lexile partner, and contains vocabulary and spelling interactive lessons. Book Adventure also allows students to create avatars and personalized bookshelves.

One thing I found quite interesting is that Book Adventure uses a gamified approach to reading and writing. It is known as a positive reinforcement platform in which parents and teachers can reward positive behavior and challenge students to read more books. Students are able to earn game coins by completing activities or after their teacher reviews submitted work. Teachers and parents are able to customize the Rewards page settings. They also have the option of turning off the page completely, setting it to weekends only, or limiting the child’s daily amount of playing.

Book Adventure offers a free version of the program which users are able to test the program. Some features that are available with the free version are: parent/teacher and student accounts, limited book quizzes and Book Adventure recommended lists, game coins awarded to students for completed book activities, student rewards page, student virtual reading pet, student reports, and live chat support. After deciding if the program is for them, users are able to purchase a premium membership, which ranges from about $44-$75 a year, depending on the number of students being signed up. Book Adventure offers discounts for homeschool groups and co-ops.

Book Adventure would be a great literacy program for students who may need more support with reading and writing. I believe this program could be used as a way to supplement their learning. The program could be used at home, or in the classroom as a learning center. Book Adventure offers great features that will support student learning and is easy for students, parents, and teachers to navigate.
