Effective Literacy Website #2 - Read Across America

Read Across America (https://www.readacrossamerica.org/) is an organization that advertises itself as a resource for educators to help motivate students to read and feel valued and welcomed. The website features many titles that are closely related to an individual’s identity. They aim to teach students how to make meaningful connections to stories and embrace diversity from the people around them. The best feature of this website is its commitment to provide content about how important it is to read throughout the year. The organization does this by providing a calendar of different topics and events for each month.

Read Across America has been a resource for many popular websites such as Reading Rockets, Kidlit.tv, International Literacy Association, and other partners with the goal of promoting reading to the youth. What makes Read Across America unique is how they thrive in providing resources and articles to schools across the nation that teaches them how to create grants and make reading events in their hometown.

When browsing through the website’s library of book titles, there are many themes to browse through that includes books about self-esteem, social justice, numerous links of different cultures, and controversial topics that are related to current events. This part of the website is useful for teachers who would like to find books for students to read that relate to lessons that are a part of other subjects.

Other features of the website include links to other literacy websites, guides to promoting reading in the classroom, educational blogs, and literacy tools for online books. Read Across America is a great resource to raise the awareness of reading and make connections using the monthly topics that they provide.
