Effective Literacy Website #3 - ReadWorks

ReadWorks (https://about.readworks.org/about.html) is a nonprofit organizations that is driven by cognitive-science research and provides instructional material for classrooms catering to grades K-12. Their mission is to improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement by providing world-class content, guidance, and integrated tools (ReadWorks, 2018).

ReadWorks provides an abundance of materials that can be used for both remote and hybrid learning. It allows educators to create digital classes so students can complete assignments online and receive quick feedback. Resources are also available to print and project both in class and virtually via screen sharing.

One of the main features of this site is the activity called "Article-A-Day." Categorized into topics that can be integrated into various content areas, each article in a set scaffolds onto the other building background knowledge, vocabulary, and reading stamina. To measure comprehension of the text, students use "The Book of Knowledge" to write 2-3 ideas the have learned. The ideas are also shared in small groups or with a class to create a discussion.

The website also provides features that accommodate young and struggling readers or readers that are English language learner. One feature is the optional audio which allows the story to be read aloud while the reader tracks the words. Other features include sentence starters and split screens so that the reader is able to return to the text while completing their Book of Knowledge.

Offering a variety of free literary resources for teachers and students alike, ReadWorks is a great platform to help develop successful and motivated readers.
