Effective Literacy Website #5 - Newsela

Newsela https://newsela.com/about/content/ is a platform that was launched by Matthew Gross whose goal was to create content that was aligned with the common core state standards for grades K-12. Another goal of his was to make his educational content more engaging, accessible, and relevant to kids.

If you have an educator's account, the homepage is fairly easy to navigate as it contains various categories that you are able to browse through such as news, featured, popular, good news, and en español. You are also able to search articles based on specific subject areas like English, science, and social studies. With a free educator's account, you are able to access many articles, create and share customizable assignments which include comprehension quizzes, writing prompts, and annotations. There are many other features, but unfortunately, they can only be accessed on a subscription.

This website is a great literacy resource as it provides information curated from events and issues in today's society. Some of the information is created for a mature audience such as the intermediate grade levels, therefore Newsela created content solely for primary grade levels. Each article is available in five different reading levels which is based off of the lexile framework. I thought this was amazing as many students vary in reading abilities and with this feature, they are able to retrieve the same information with vocabulary that is familiar to them.

Overall, I would recommend this resource to others as it not only makes teaching easier, but the content is engaging and relevant to students as well.
