Effective Literacy Website #6 - Reading Bear

Reading Bear https://www.readingbear.org/ is a project based off watchknowlearn.org. The website caters to beginning readers ages 4-7 and target skills pertaining to phonics and vocabulary. As you enter the website, it displays a child friendly background that I would say is very attractive for young learners. Easy to navigate tabs are located towards the top of the homepage and you scroll down, you are automatically introduced to the educational content.

The most important feature of this website is the 50+ presentations that teach more than 1,200 words and over 100 phonics patterns. Each presentation comprises of a specific phonics pattern with related vocabulary words. Each word is pronounced at four different speeds and each sound is highlighted as it is spoken. After the pronunciations, a sentence, picture, and video is provided so that children are able to make meaningful connections.

I would definitely use this website as a supplemental resource in my classroom, either as a whole class or for one-to-one tutoring. Many children struggle with phonics and blending - this website, much like direct instruction, provided repetitive examples and pictures for children to strengthen their reading skills in a systematic and progressive way.
