IRA Weekly Newsletter: Effective Literacy Website #7
Roy the Zebra (https://www.roythezebra.com) is a literacy website for emerging readers, age 5-7. This is a free website that has reading games, guided reading stories, songs, and worksheets. All of the resources are free to use and have a zebra character, Roy, be the mascot for the young readers to follow along with. These resources are free however, there is a paid membership for Club Roy. Club Roy is an extension of Roy the Zebra that offers more activities and additional reading games.
The reading games are intended to support beginning readers. These games can be played on a desktop and on a mobile device. These games highlight different reading skills such as alphabets, capital letters, vowel phonemes, and CVC words. Readers can click on a reading game and be guided by Roy and other characters to help them build these skills.
The website also offers a guided story reading following Roy doing different activities. The chapters read like an eBook with voice. On the chapter, students can have the story read aloud to them. There is even a before and after discussion tab that has questions to engage and make connections with the student’s reading. Along with the guided reading, there are worksheets available for print and saving that follow each chapter.
Roy the Zebra is a great literacy tool for emerging readers. The materials are engaging with the character of Roy, who guides the students through their instruction. Students will enjoy how user friendly the website is and how they can interact with the website on desktop and mobile. Readers can engage in reading games, songs, worksheets, and guided story reading. The websites offer an abundance of free resources that students and parents will enjoy to help build beginning reader skills.
