Seussville - Effective Literacy Website #7

 Seussville

When you think of children’s books, it’s hard not to shift your mind away from books written by Dr. Seuss. Seussville (https://www.seussville.com/) brings the world of Dr. Seuss to life! This literacy website is easy to navigate and will have children intrigued from the start. From its vivid animations to the ample of features offered, students will be engaged in exploring the world of Dr. Seuss. At the top of the homepage, you will find the tool bar that separates all the content: Explore, Watch, Play, and Shop.

Explore. This tab holds features that connect you to the background of this renowned author and his books.  One feature offered is the introduction to all characters created by Dr. Seuss. Viewers can explore and read about interesting facts that are not mentioned elsewhere. Other features include a library of all Dr. Seuss books and links to Dr. Seuss real-life experiences. Viewers can find links to the Dr. Seuss theme park, museum, live musical and carnival cruise all on this tab. The library of all Dr. Seuss books does not offer free reading, but it does allow the opportunity to purchase them. My favorite feature offered in this tab is titled “Dr. Seuss”. Here you can read about the man behind all the popular children books, view his timeline, explore his sketches/art gallery, and take a look at some of the photos from his lifetime. This will allow students the opportunity to read and make a connection to who he is and what made his books so popular.

Watch and Play. These tabs offer animated short clips and games from shows that brought Dr. Seuss’s books to life. Although there is not a wide option to choose from, this site allows students to connect fun-filled storylines to digital features. Some of Dr. Seuss’s famous characters have been brought to life in big, animated movies on Netflix. Viewers can click on the photo links offered in the Watch tab to be taken directly to the movies.

Shop. This tab is self-explanatory. Viewers have the option to buy popular artwork, books or merchandise from the world of Dr. Seuss.

Seussville also offers an entire section dedicated to educators. Teachers can explore ways in which Dr. Seuss’ material can be connected within the classroom. The “learning library” tab can be used to find material in which Dr. Seuss books can be connected across the curriculum. Educators can also use the “Activities and Printable” tab to explore the vast number of resources offered. From Arts/Crafts projects, to word skills, writing and recipes, there is something for everyone here. Teachers can also find ways in which they can participate in two popular Dr. Seuss events. There is a tab dedicated to “Dr. Seuss’s Birthday” in which activity guides are offered to allow this literacy focused event and celebration to be brought to the classroom. Lastly, educators can click the “The Lorax Project” tab to explore and plan for ways in which students can participate in this event to protect the environment.

Overall, this website is highly effective for fostering the love for literacy through Dr. Seuss! The best part about this site is that it doesn’t just end here. Viewers can click on the “Grinchmas” (https://www.grinchgooddeeds.com/)  animation on the homepage to be taken to another Dr. Seuss literacy site that focuses on one of the most famous characters, the Grinch! Viewers will find even more literacy activities and information on this stie as well. The love for Dr. Seuss and his books really go beyond our imagination.
