Effective Literacy Website #4 - ReadTheory

ReadTheory (https://readtheory.org/) is a free reading comprehension program that caters to students who need to improve on specific skills within this area. Teachers use this website to monitor their students’ learning progress without having to grade or assign anything. After a student signs up for the website, they are automatically directed to a page that administers a pre-test. Once the student is tested and placed at a certain level, he or she can begin their ReadTheory journey. The program will give the student passages suitable for their level and will progressively move up when the student shows improvement or mastery of the levels.

Read Theory was founded by Tanner Hock. He is one of the writers and editors for passages used in the program. His purpose of creating this website was influenced by his studies of philosophy at the University of North Carolina. He discovered how important it is for students to nurture their critical thinking skills. He believed that if students are able to read and think critically, they will be able to use this mode of learning as a tool to live fuller, richer lives.

The people behind the website is what makes its contents credible and reliable. The team consists of notable scholars and novelists who have advanced degrees and are award winning teachers. Educators who use ReadTheory intend on improving their students’ reading comprehension skills. With a diverse team behind the site, it is guaranteed that the contents will not be low of quality and the experience will be enriching for both the teachers and students.

Beyond the program, ReadTheory also provides many threads of tips and ideas of how to teach reading comprehension in the classroom. There is a specific tab called “remote learning”, where the website provides in detail effective ways to teach reading online. The authors in the articles consist of many educators such as administrators, professors, and teachers. This website is surely a reliable resource for a skill in reading that many students struggle with.
