Effective Literacy Website #4 - OxfordOwl

OxfordOwl (https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/) is an award-winning, educational website created by Oxford University in the UK that offers various resources that target reading, English, and math skills. The homepage is fairly easy to navigate as each tab is labeled with specific topics or subject areas. Users are also able to search the website for resources that pertain to a targeted age group.

OxfordOwl was created to support children's learning at home and at school and act as a guide for parents by providing tips on how to help their child in the different content areas. The website includes an abundance of free resources which include activities, worksheets, and more for specific areas such as phonics, spelling, reading, creative writing, and math skills for children ages 3-11.

The websites serves as a great literacy resource because it provides a fairly large eBook library supplemented by interactive read-alouds done by professional storytellers. Other features include audio guides for phonetic sounds and blending, as well as descriptive guides and tips for developing grammatical and creative writers. OxfordOwl has a customized system for determining a child's reading level according to their color-coded ban books - lilac bands being beginning, nursery books to dark red book bands which are appropriate for years 6/7, ages 10-11.

As we continue with distance-learning, this website provides many activities that can aid in various educational skills needed for primary grade-levels. Worksheets are saved as PDFs and are easily available to print.
