IRA Newsletter Effective Literacy Website #5: Oxford Owl

Oxford Owl

Oxford Owl (https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk) is an educational website that provides resources for math, writing, and reading. Oxford Owl has many free literacy resources for parents, students, and teachers. Oxford Owl has their resources organized by topic, age, and grade level. This is a useful literacy tool to build literacy skills at home and foster literacy skills throughout a child’s growth.

Oxford Owl’s reading tab offers reading topics that have discussion and suggestions for teachers and parents. Some of the popular topics include phonics, comprehension problems, and reading levels. Each article offers a simple breakdown of the topic as well as suggestions for reading improvement. These resources are completely free to access without an account. Oxford Owl also provides a free eBook library. The eBook library is free to access and browse but you will need to create an account to read the book. All of the books can be organized by grade level or age group.

Oxford Owl also has an English tab that provides resources for vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and writing. Similar to the reading tab, everything is organized by grade level or age group. For each grade level, there is an overview of what skills students might be introduced to. Each category offers helpful tips for home and school. For teachers, there are added activities with graphic organizers that follow the category.

In addition to the subject tabs, there is also an “At School” and “Kids’ Activities” tab that educators may find useful. Since this website is based in the United Kingdom, the “At School” information follows the U.K. education system. “Kids’ Activities” offers different activities and worksheets that are able to be saved and printed. These activities follow different literacy and math topics by grade level or age group.

Oxford Owl is a great literacy tool that helps both teachers and parents. Teachers will appreciate the resources that align with literacy topics and grade level. Parents will appreciate the helpful literacy tips to help their children at home. Both teachers and parents will appreciate that all these resources are completely free, and most can be accessed without creating an account.
