IRA Newsletter Effective Literacy Website #6: Wonderopolis

Wonderopolis

Wonderopolis ( https://wonderopolis.org ) is a free literacy website that offers a variety of different nonfiction articles based on topics that real students “wonder” about. Wonderopolis is a safe reading community that allows students to communicate and interact with other verified users. With a verified account, students are able to leave comments on the articles. On the website, there are different nonfiction articles about different topics that are completely free to access without an account.

Wonderopolis writes their articles based on actual submissions sent in to their website. There is a section on the website that invites students to submit questions they have about any topic. These articles start with the title “Have you ever wondered about…” or other questions that students may ask. Some of these articles are aligned with the Common Core State Standards that are listed. All of these articles have exciting digital media like videos and photos of the topic they are reading about. Students will surely enjoy using the media to enhance what their article is about.

All articles also have a key word list labeled “wonder words.” The wonder words are highlighted in the article and organized in a list on the side. When a student hovers over the keyword, the word’s definition will pop up. This is a useful feature as students can completely engage with the article and not have to worry about the definition of words.

At the end of the article, there is a “Try it Out” section that takes learning beyond reading and a short quiz that students can take to test their knowledge. The “ Try it Out” section offers an activity that students can do after reading. These activities are based on the reading topic and extend knowledge by experimenting. The quiz has 3-5 questions based on the article  that students can take either on the website or saved and printed as a PDF. When students take the quiz on the website, it is automatically scored.

Wonderopolis is a great literacy website that promotes background knowledge on various topics. Through its interactive and engaging articles, students will be engaged and enjoying learning about nonfiction topics. The added resources such as videos, photos, word lists, and quizzes are what truly make this a useful literacy resource for independent learners.
